Home Made Rabbit Toy – Cardboard Pocket Toy

I’m going to show you how to make use of those empty loo rolls that either end up in the recycling bin (if you’re good) or in the household rubbish bin. There are several toys you can make from these cardboard rolls but I’m going to show you the quickest and easiest one to do as it does not require scissors or anything but the roll and some treats. On average, this toy has a lifespan of half an hour but that it makes a good boredom breaker and you can make one each for your rabbits so start saving those loo roll centres!

Home Made Rabbit Toy- Cardboard Pocket Toy

This is a variation on those small cardboard tunnels you see in pet shops that are stuffed with hay. I once got a big one, about 25cm across for my rabbits to play with but now they’ve emptied it of hay, the tunnel is too big to fill back up. Since this toy uses empty loo rolls, its not big enough for your bunny to run through but it doesn’t cost you much at all.

Materials:

Empty loo roll centre

Some of their favourite hay

A few healthy treats

Method:

First fold in one side of one end of the roll and then fold in the other side. This makes the loo roll into a p0cket, the folded sides serving as a bottom.

Stuff it with hay and treats. Choose something that is enticing and smells nice as you want it so your rabbits are excited about biting it open. I used Readigrass as that has a stronger fragrant smell, therefore more likely to attract their attention. I’ve tried meadow hay in the past but that wasn’t as good an incentive. For the treat, I just used dried apple and blackberry leaves. My rabbits go mad for this so it was a good choice. What you use it up to you, you can even use fruit or veg provided you remove it after a few hours.

(yes, that is Nibbles climbing all over me, hoping to grab some Readigrass)

Then simply fold up the open end and voila! A home made rabbit toy ready to use in a matter of seconds. Cheap and fast, you have no excuse now!
